Breed health predispositions

The health-condition catalog records breed predispositions: a breed that is more prone to a condition than its species as a whole. Each record has a risk level and an evidence level. The same data drives the Health section of United Pet Club’s public breed pages and the “Breeds at higher risk” list on each condition article.

Both routes are anonymous GETs under health-condition/v1/. Responses use the standard envelope (data, resultCode) and are cached. Display names come back in the requested locale (requested locale, then its language default, then en-US, then the sysName), so show ...Name fields and key on ...SysName fields (Localized names).

Species and breeds are identified by their animal-taxonomy sysName (DOG, LABRADOR_RETRIEVER), the same codes the species and breed reads return (Species and gestation).

FieldWhat it holds
sysName, name, laySynonymThe condition: stable code, localized name, and the everyday name when it has one.
slugThe condition article’s URL slug in this locale (/health/conditions/{slug} on www). Can be null while a locale’s slugs are being written.
riskSysName, riskNameHIGH, MODERATE, SLIGHT or LOW. Rows come highest risk first.
evidenceSysName, evidenceNameSTRONG, MODERATE, LIMITED, ANECDOTAL or EXPERT_OPINION.
isHereditaryFlagThe condition can be inherited.
inheritanceSysName, inheritanceName, geneSymbolHow it is inherited in this species (AUTOSOMAL_RECESSIVE, POLYGENIC, …) and the gene, when recorded. UNKNOWN means nothing is known.
omiaReferenceThe OMIA phene id, NNNNNN-TAXON. 000473-9615 is https://omia.org/OMIA000473/9615/.
bodySystemSysName, bodySystemName, bodySystemSlugThe condition’s primary body system.

A breed with nothing recorded, or an unknown breed, returns an empty list. A code that is not a sysName (letters, digits and _; at most 40 characters for a species and 80 for a breed) is refused with 400 (HealthCondition_Catalog_VL_Request_RJ) before any lookup.

Rows are ordered by species, then risk (highest first), then evidence. speciesCode and breedCode are animal-taxonomy sysNames: resolve them to names and pages with the species and breed reads. A breed your copy of the taxonomy does not know is best left out rather than shown as a raw code.

  • Say what it is: a predisposition is a higher risk for the breed as a group, not a diagnosis of any animal. United Pet Club’s pages pair the list with a “consult your veterinarian” note.
  • Show the risk level in words. A coloured mark alone does not survive greyscale, screen readers or copy-and-paste.
  • Link the OMIA entry when there is one. It is the citable source for the inherited conditions.
